Interactive Process Map

To address a complex hiring process with multiple decision points, I chose an interactive format that allowed end users to access detailed hiring instructions in a step-by-step format. Users have the option to hover over individual steps for additional details or click links to access corresponding technical guides.

Why this solution works: An abundance of documentation already existed, but end users had to know what they were looking for in order to access the materials. This process map removed that challenge by guiding users to the documentation as needed.

Scenario-based learning

I created a scenario-based module to help adult learners new to the public school environment understand their responsibilities regarding safety and security. Plunging learners straight into a scenario before providing them with formal instruction is straight from the Cathy Moore (my eLearning lodestar) playbook, but it can be a challenge to convince your stakeholders to adopt this unconventional model.

Why this solution works: In our day-to-day lives, we encounter new situations and learn from experience, often by trial and error. So why should online learning be any different? Learners have the opportunity to utilize resources to inform their answer or follow their “gut” and guess a response; they are then provided feedback in the form of realistic consequences. This places the learners in the story, meaning it’s more likely that they’ll remember the underlying lesson. After all, who doesn’t love a good story?

Infographics and Learning Aids

Telling a story through images: Infographic

To garner support for a project redesign, I crafted this infographic to help tell the story of how the program had evolved, what lessons we had learned, and where the project was going.

Why this solution works: I needed to quickly communicate my objective, the supporting data, and the overall approach in a way that was easily accessible to the organzation’s leadership (i.e., folks without a lot of time who are looking for impact). The infographic painted a picture (literally!) of marked improvement and the two facets of future development – without belaboring the point.

Technical Writing

This document had to serve dual purposes: part technical user guide and part operating agreements. Meeting both needs is tough! I had to find the right balance between providing enough context for the user to know what she’s doing and keeping things succinct enough to serve as a just-in-time learning aid.

Why this solution works: I relied heavily on screenshots to address the technical components and used callouts to provide additional context and cross-referencing throughout the document. This helped the user to access information in smaller, less overwhelming segments and visually guided the user’s eye throughout the document.
